It’s not my fault… the victim syndrome …

Do you sometimes find yourself wondering: “Why can’t I become detached from this person who’s so critical of everyone, impulsive, never admits their mistake, belittles others and has disrespected me time and time again over all these years? Why has this been placed on my path when I’m a good person and I do my best with them? Why doesn’t he/she admit their errors and apologize?”

But did you know that if they were to admit their errors, they’d feel diminished, less than nothing, a nobody… Admitting their mistakes means becoming fragile in front of you and others; it’s not easy to do this when we haven’t worked on ourselves. Calling themselves into question is difficult for them because whenever we find ourselves at fault, our self-image is modified. The person can also fear the consequences, whether it’s a question of losing of self-esteem, their stature, their shell, the other person’s love and ending up alone. The ego sometimes uses behavioral forces so as to forget to listen, so as not to see one’s faults or flaws; hence camouflaging the fact that one wasn’t right by maintaining a position of strength. One’s need for love, attention, being right is stronger than the good sense of what is the right thing to say or do. We human beings become complex when we seek to protect ourselves, to survive in an ambiguous situation. We often become like a little animal, ready to do anything to exist and be heard.

And did you know that behind these kinds of behavioral mechanism hides fear of being rejected, imperfect or unlikable; criticism can also be an attitude of feeling like a victim and coming across as the victim of the story is also a form of self-defense, a way of expressing strength and power in a relationship. If life revealed to the person who they really are when they criticize, they’d probably become too harsh on themselves, turning the criticism inward against themselves. In a way, when a person is extremely self-sacrificing or becomes depressed, that’s what they do. They interiorize their ill-being and concentrate their problems instead of exteriorizing them by criticizing others. Discovering that we’ve made a mistake, admitting, and repairing it is an art of greatest wisdom. And without spiritual knowledge, one can only repress or express oneself ambiguously.

One day wisdom leads us to the highest level of empathy that exists. We manage to talk to ourselves and say: “Have I ever made a mistake or criticized?” And we come to realize that in fact everyone does this to defend themselves and to learn.
One day, we become capable of talking to the other person, of de-dramatizing and disarming without any inferiority or superiority… and when we ourselves make a mistake, we understand it as a step leading us to the cause and even greater knowledge.
